GESTE 2022 Open Call

The exhibition Meta_Contra_Verse includes an open call alongside the curated selection which features both digital and physical artworks. The curators are Shiva Lynn Burgos, the founder of GESTE, Camille Gajate and Georg Bak.

For this 6th edition of GESTE Paris we seek shape-shifting avatars, intangibilities, NFTs and minted physical representations thereof, WEB 3.0, A.I. generated, digital and blockchain based works, the metaverse, and verse in general as a lyrical contra post to dialogue with historical art concepts of imaginary worlds.

Our accomplished international jury has selected six winning entries to be included in the exhibition open to the public from October through late November and online in conjunction with Paris Photo. GESTE Paris will purchase at least one work from the jury selection which will be added to the GESTE permanent art collection. All shortlisted artists will be included in a screen presentation which will be displayed during the exhibition.  The jury has chosen works which address the theme of the exhibition, Meta_Contra_Verse, in a striking and original manner with a strong interplay between process, form and content.

The Open Call section of the exhibition receives submissions from all over the world and provides an opportunity to showcase new artists’ work that has not received the exposure it deserves alongside established artists. Beyond the exhibition itself there is a program for artist, curator and expert led private tours talks and events which will take place throughout the month of the exhibition. This opportunity echoes the very purpose of Paris Photo week and beyond by participating in its abundance and legitimacy among collectors, artists and academics.

Concept: Meta_Contra_Verse

"The future is already here, it's just not evenly distributed."    William Gibson

GESTE Paris takes its inspiration from influential philosopher Vilém Flusser who described photography in terms of a philosophical action or gesture. Since his passing in 1991 the world of photography and image-making has expanded exponentially. Artificial intelligence is creating algorithmic hyper-interpretations, virtual and augmented reality let us explore worlds both real and simulated. Glitches in these systems are self-reflective and catalyse further creative opportunities.

What would Flusser say when confronted with these novel realities and potentials?  How can we play within and alongside (meta) the machine rather than against it (contra)? How have the means shifted our future's future vision of creation? How are fears attached to these transformational media? Why is it contra_versial? Is there space for everyone in this space? What does it look like? Feel like?  Smell like?  Where do these bubbles divert and connect artistically?

GESTE Paris invites submissions for inclusion in its 2019 art and photography exhibition La Vérité Déguisée (The Truth in Disguise), conceived by the artist and curator Shiva Lynn Burgos and Dominique Charlet, Director of Agency Charlet Photographies and independent curator. The open call selection is by an exceptional international jury, see below. The opportune timing of the exhibition echoes the very purpose of Paris Photo week by participating in its abundance and legitimacy among collectors, artists and academics.

La Vérité Déguisée (The Truth in Disguise)has many facets. The image can be a pretense in the conceptual or physical sense. One can alter, conceal, camouflage, recompose, counterfeit, cover, decorate, disfigure, deform, denature, disillusion, conceal, coat, wrap, distort, invent, manipulate, collage, silence, transform, veil ... the "reality" of objects, situations, people and ways of seeing. How can our perceptions be affected by techniques that hide or alter? In the era of reality TV and false information, the selfie culture and the virtual identities of social media and gaming, artificial intelligence and political propaganda, how is the truth disguised or revealed?

Exhibition includes: Idris Khan, John Stezaker, Joan Foncuberta, Christer Strömholm, Laia Abril, Nicole Cohen, The Mariwai Project, Tom Lovelace, Andreas Gursky, Yuken Teruya, C.Javier Barrera, Sebastiaan Bremer, Marina Abramovič and Ulay and others alongside the open call artists. The focus is on diverse, unique and unpublished works in which the images resonate the theme via various media such as photographs, video, sculpture and performance.

November 1-30, 2019 marks the 4th edition of GESTE, dedicated to the photographic and filmic "gesture", as coined by philosopher Vilém Flusser. It is a place of discovery for established and emerging artists from all over the world to exhibit and engage in an open dialogue between artists, curators, writers and collectors through tours, conferences and direct engagement. GESTE is the link between a private collection and a selection by guest curators.

Submissions must be made via picter.com in two categories, "Single Image" for a work selected to be shown on its own and "Series" for a group of images selected to be shown together. GESTE Paris is committed to experimental processes and invites photo-based artworks from outside the normal bounds of photography. 3-D and sculptural image-based works can be submitted as a digital photo with a full accompanying description.

Winning selection is made by an international jury based on quality and response to the theme: La Vérité Déguisée. GESTE Paris will commit to purchase works by at least two of the winning selected artists to add to its permanent collection.

Binary / Non-Binary

en français voir ci-dessous

Black or white, on or off, male or female, digital or analog, zero or one. A binary viewpoint divides the world cleanly and everything is in one category or the other, as two alternatives existing in opposition. The non-binary viewpoint opens the world up to a multiplicity of categories, rejecting the simplification and contrasting nature of the binary position and yet must include both the single and the infinite.

How do artists exemplify these concepts today and how do they co-exist ?

The world is not black and white but full of greyscale and colour and even ultra- and infra- colours beyond the range of our human eyes. Where does the spectrum lie in terms of scientifically definable code, digital geometry, astrometrics, consciousness, sexuality, spirituality, artificial intelligence and the technological singularity?

GESTE Paris 2018 invites works for its third forthcoming exhibition

Binary / Non-Binary

Although based in Paris we positively welcome international submissions from around the world.

GESTE Paris is committed to experimental processes and invites photo-based artworks from outside the normal bounds of photography.

The 2018 exhibition will include notable artists : Constantin Brancusi, Frederick Sommer, Pierre Molinier, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Ned & Shiva Productions, Francis Ruyter, Olaf Nicolai, Ghost of a Dream, Zean Cabangis, CJ Heyliger, Susan Morris, Nicolas Schöffer, Hannibal Volkoff, Samra Habib, Quentin Houdas, Gianfranco Chiavacci, Martin Désilets, Vera Molnar, Robert Mallary and others.

The Curators are Shiva Lynn Burgos (US/France), Georg Bak (Switzerland) and Alisa Phommaxahay (France/Laos)

For the first time GESTE will host an OPEN CALL to widen the scope of participation. The International Jury includes Raina Lampkins-Fielder (museum curator and multimedia artist), Marc Lenot (mathematician, economist and art critic), Brandei Estes (Head of Photographs at Sotheby's London), Robin Hanson (author professor and researcher: The Future of Humanity Institute of Oxford University, A.I. programmer NASA), Dominic Palfreyman (financier, art philanthropist and collector), Jason Bailey (blockchain, provenance, and digital art expert, creator of artnome.com) and ORLAN (artist) as honorable artist counselor to the jury.

JURY bios

The jury will select a number of winners from all submissions and these works included in the exhibition GESTE Paris 2018. Binary / Non-Binary.  GESTE Paris will pay such reasonable printing and framing costs as necessary to enable the works to be exhibited after consultation with the submitting photographer. Works will be for sale on the basis of equal sharing after costs at prices to be mutually agreed between GESTE Paris and the submitting photographer. Unsold prints will be available for collection in Paris at the end of the exhibition or returned by post if the photographer sends a stamped and addressed envelope.

ALL appropriate submissions will be included in the exhibition as a digital slideshow.

The categories are SINGLE IMAGE (up to 3), GROUP or SERIES (2-6) and VIDEO or FILM (1 per entry)

Binaire / Non-Binaire
